Best 7 days this year!

The past 7 days have been a whirlwind of activity for Early Wheels.  I have been blessed by some amazing families families and therapist's, and feel the need to share!  My amazing 7 days started with Walmart contacting me that one of my local stores had selected Early Wheels as a Community Partner, and we had received a grant.  I am so thankful for the funds to buy much needed cars and seats! Then, I went out to do an assessment on a sweetie.  He wanted no part of any of my cars, but since the therapist and I both thought he would do well with a joystick vehicle, we decided to leave one for practice.  Within 5 minutes of leaving the house, his mom had sent a video showing him driving across the room!  While the picture is grainy, his smile pretty much says it all....

This week I had the thrill of delivering a car to a very sweet young man.  He has some pretty significant muscle tone, but when he sat in the car, he knew exactly what to do- an arm reached straight to the button and he took off! His mother, his therapist, and I were thrilled, as he had never shown the ability to reach for and stay on a switch before.

That afternoon a picked up a donated toy.  I usually try to stay away from cars bigger than my coffee table, but I knew that on Wednesday, I would be doing an assessment on a sweet girl that would need a bigger car. The Lord had provided perfectly, and with a few modifications, it will have a new driver. Hopefully, she will get to drive her older sister around.

Today I switched gears from power to manual, and took a couple of booster scooters to trial with this cutie. His hands immediately went to the wheels, and before I left, he was able to cruise down the hall. I will have the privilege of building a scooter for him, complete with a basket for his vent and a push handle for when he gets tired of pushing.

From my appointment, I went straight to UTD.  I am so blessed to have UTD pretty much in my backyard. The past couple of semesters, I have been working with a team of students to make me a universal box for modifying ride-on cars. I got the chance to meet my new team, and was thrilled that 3 of my students returned to take the class again, as well as adding 2 new students to my team.  UTD has allowed me to add another project this year, so I got to meet my second team as well.  They will be taking a hoverboard "buggy" and figuring out if it can be controlled electronically.  I love to see the energy and excitement of the students!
